Porsche 918 Hits Top Gear With Its Dissertation

Some say that time is the teller of all stories, true legends glow brighter as the fading spotlight of fame diminishes. Rivals come and go but the lasting effect of truly great contributions have the capabilities to settle any doubt of greatness; greatness that can change the world, greatness that can save a love, greatness that proves that sometimes an idea needs to be reconsidered rather than eradicated.
The NSX revolutionary aluminum body changed the design of all cars. The mass produce hybrid technology of the Prius showed that it was technologically possible to go further with intelligent thinking. Now we have two immaculate contenders fighting for a page in the history book of automotive greatness, the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder. Both from the outskirt appear to be utilizing similar tools to fix the main problem affecting all supercars of the future, fuel efficiency. But when we look closer at the details that make these machines great, we see that there is significant differences between the two.
The McLaren utilizes a relatively barebone approach to ridiculous speed whereas the 918 is Porsche's entire R&D facility on wheels. The technology in the McLaren is there to make us smile, while the technology in the 918 Porsche is there to make our kids dream. They both deserve a page in the book of automotive greatness, but in the history of cars we praise, it has always been the barebone smile generator that holds that special place in our hearts over the technologically infused science project. Which car have you pinned on your bedroom ceiling the most, the "please turn to chapter 14" Porsche 959 or the "let's party" Ferrari F40.
